Our mission is to provide learning and serving experiences in ocean conservation while fostering heart connections to the sea. Our educational philosophy is one of place-based, experiential learning. Groups are hosted by coastal congregations who have made Blue Theology one of their church ministries.
Established in 2008
In 2008, Rev. Dan Paul and Rev. Deborah Streeter founded the Blue Theology Mission Station as a part of the Christian Church of Pacific Grove (CCPG) in Pacific Grove, California. Bue Theology co-founder Rev. Deborah Streeter, a retired UCC minister, coined the term ”blue theology,” naming the mission to intertwine ocean conservation with the Christian tradition. Upon determining the church’s new mission, a Blue Theology Task Force was assembled: involving church members, local volunteers, marine scientists, and church elders to collaborate in building the Blue Theology program.
With a shared vision, the group began planning activities in ministry to connect youth to God’s marine creation. Blue Theology was developed with the help of passionate volunteers and local partner organizations around Pacific Grove. The church has continued to host young blue theologians over the past 14 years. In 2017, the Christian Church of Pacific Grove became the first congregation to receive the Disciples of Christ “aquamarine chalice” certification.
